Beginners Start Here!

This is a short tutorial for newbies on The Subud Wiki.
A Taste of The Subud Wiki
The basic aim of The Subud Wiki is to facilitate communication and collaboration between Subud members, on topics in general such as enterprises, Subud centres, wing activities, organisational matters, documentation of meetings and events, and personal interests. It is very easy to create, edit and discuss topics on the site: you don't need to know anything about computers! You first need to
register to view and edit pages on the wiki. Registration is open to Subud members only. The wiki is intended for open communication between Subud members: anything you post can be read by all other members. The rules of The Subud Wiki are very simple, see:
TheSubudWikiRules.
What is a Wiki?
A Wiki is a website which a user can edit, simply through their browser. It is a convenient way of sharing information online.
- "Wiki" is short for "wiki wiki", the Hawaiian for "Quick"
- The most famous example is Wikipedia, illustrating the use of a wiki to collaborate on a free encyclopedia. Here's Wikipedia's article on wikis: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wiki
- A Wiki is basically a shared, online, persistent whiteboard
The Subud Wiki

The Subud Wiki has three functions:
- Networking: each member has a Profile Page—like on Facebook—which can be used to display their personal photo, contact details, skills, interests, links... whatever they want to share
- Wiki: any member can add content
... or change what is written
... or change the organisation of the content
- Forum: any member can join in the conversations and add topics
Whatever what you write is
...
nicely presented ...
remembered ... and
always accessible.

Member profiles
Each member has a profile page, which works like Facebook:
- you can put a photo of yourself
- your contact details, if you wish to post these
- a status message

The Subud Wiki has a feature that Facebook doesn't have, you are free to edit the page as you like, for example to write:
- more about yourself, your experience, skills and interests
- pictures
- links
- attachments
- whatever your imagination permits!
Each profile page can only be edited by the member to whom it belongs.
Membership Table and Photo Book
You can browse and search the list of members:
- by the Members Photo Book of their profile pictures:
- by the Members Table – a sortable table of the details they have posted:
Creating, editing and linking pages
You can easily create new pages:
- by clicking the link
Create New Topic on the side bar
- by clicking on a link to a page that doesn't exist yet (shown as a question mark after a WikiWord)
- Any time you try to visit a page that doesn't exist, The Subud Wiki will invite you to create it.
Make sure the names of topics are
always WikiWords:
All about WikiWords:
- a WikiWord is a word that starts with uppercase, then some lowercase, then more uppercase (a.k.a CamelCase)
- This has a special meaning to The Subud Wiki. If it matches the name of another topic, The Subud Wiki will automatically create a link to that page for you.
- If there is no such page, then the word is highlighted and has a question mark put after the word, LikeThis?
- This lets you enter the names of topics you think should exist, but don't yet
- You, or someone else, can always come along later and click on the question mark!
- If you want to use a WikiWord without a link appearing then just put an exclamation mark before the word:
!WikiWord results in WikiWord
Linking to pages and URLs is very easy:
- A WikiWord automatically links to the page of that name
- You can make these links easier to read using square brackets:
- When linking from the main Wiki site to the Forum or from the Forum to the main Wiki site, prefix the link with
Forum. or Main. respectively.
- An ordinary URL pasted into text will appear as a link - http://www.subud.org
- You can also prettify URLs using square brackets:
- [[http://www.subud.org.uk/][Subud Britain]] appears as Subud Britain
Editing is done with the WYSIWYG editor:
- click on the Edit link at the top right of the page
- It's just as easy to edit a Subud Wiki page as use a word processor!
- You can use smileys: typing :-) gives
... see the full list of supported smileys in SmileysTable. You can even add smileys to this table!!
- you can also edit the raw text of the topic if you wish, using Foswiki Markup Language (click on the Raw Edit link in the page footer). A full reference of Foswiki formatting is here: TextFormattingRules, and a "light" version in WikiSyntax.
The Forum
The Subud Wiki has a bulletin board-style forum, for the discussion of topics in general. Topics are currently arranged in to categories relating to the wings of Subud:
- Charitable, Cultural, Enterprise;
- there is also an Organisation category for discussion about organisational matters;
- and a General category for everything else, e.g. the meaning of life.

Attach button at the top right (and in the footer) of the page.

attach button
- then embed them with the
image button
You can embed multimedia in a page (e.g. attached videos and sounds or videos from YouTube) by following the instructions in

Advanced formatting and Foswiki macros

Macros are commands enclosed in percent signs that are that are expanded to some other text or graphics when the topic is displayed. For example,
%TOPIC% is expanded to
BeginnersStartHere, the title of this topic. Two useful macros are:
- %TOC% will insert a table of contents
- %COMMENT% will insert a little comment box in the topic – so people can add blog-style comments at the bottom.
For a full list, see
System.Macros.
Documentation Graphics: There are many icons available to use in your topics as macros. Use
%ICON{"help"}%,
%ICON{"tip"}%, and
%ICON{"warning"}% to get:

,

, and

, respectively.
DocumentGraphics lists them all.
